Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska 2008 This month has been very busy for me. December 2nd, I hosted the VIP shopping night at Dillard's in Lincoln. I sat by the entrance and welcomed shoppers and invited them to register for the free drawings throughout the evening. I met many nice people and distributed about 25 signed pictures and business cards to those interested in sharing with their membership organizations that I am available for presentations. I completed approval on my brochure and Eakes Office Equipment in Grand Island donated 200 copies for me to distribute. I had my funding letter approved by Crystal and got busy, and mailed 123 letters to family, friends, and businesses I patronize. On the 30th , I received a request from a couple to rally the Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska organization as well as advocate myself for better accessibility in hotels. They travel and have experienced the same problems I have many times with hotel rooms and beds not accessible for the use of a Hoyer lift. I am fully aware of this problem as I traveled this past summer throughout Omaha, Lincoln, and Iowa. In order for me to get into bed with the use of my lift, we have to line it up at the end of the bed and knock it over hoping for the best possible landing. Many times I was bruised because of the force of the lift falling on me. This however is inevitable as the beds have boards under the base so the Hoyer cannot roll under. We have also found many bathrooms that were not accommodating to the size of a Hoyer lift. I would have to leave my hotel room and go use the public bathroom because of its size. This is a huge inconvenience when one has to dress and undress a great distance from their hotel room. If you have any direction as to where to start addressing this issue please let me know. I am looking forward to the New Year and the experiences it will hold. Lorinda
