Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska 2008 January has been very exciting for me as I am receiving responses to my funding request letters. I am keeping busy writing thank-you notes. I have been trying to schedule presentations with a local chapter for a women's depression support group that contacted me; and I have also heard from the Columbus ARC organization. At this time, we are in the midst of phone tag and when I get those dates scheduled I will let you know. I am currently advocating for my own sister who is also in a wheelchair. Jacque's shower chair broke two weeks ago and she was thrown down in a position that broke her knee in two places. She had surgery and has a six-inch plate and several pins to support the bones, yet because she is wheelchair bound they cannot cast the leg to protect it. I have been involved in helping her find the right avenues to make her apartment accessible for a Hoyer lift. She had attendants that transferred her up to this point, and now has to adapt to the Hoyer. The two health care facilities, along with the hospital were very unaware of the equipment that she would need and how to order it for her. I immediately started research on line for a better sling that would fit her 4ft frame. I am surprised often at the lack of knowledge regarding accessibility. I am utilizing my past experience to contact the resources she needs. This experience is just one of many where people in my community have contacted me to get help. I am inspired that my community needs to have a Benefits and Disabled Service Coordinator. Hall County is still so far behind Lincoln and Omaha, yet our disabled community numbers are growing. Hoping everyone is well and I will be excited to share more news in February.
