Ms. Wheelchair Nebraska 2008
June Report

Where did June Go?

I remember the month starting and my lists getting longer instead of shorter for what I wanted to accomplish in the month.

I am finishing up the final details for my trip to Washington and packing and repacking because I have this unsatisfied feeling that I am forgetting something. I have collected Sandhill Crane pins from the Convention and Visitors bureau, along with some nice things to display at my table. My display board is almost done. It will show my sponsors, information about Nebraska, and the advocating I have been involved with. I still need a recipe for a food that represents Nebraska and I am thinking of a menu used for tail-gating since we are such avid fans of our football!

In addition to pageant preparations I spoke for the Kiwanis club on June 6 th at the Howard Johnson. I also was also contacted on June 23 rd by Nebraska Advocacy Services to see if I would be able to help them in their efforts to get more disabled citizens to register to vote. I had many ideas, of course. I shared my enthusiasm about helping out and also the fact that right now, I have to prioritize my time. We are meeting in August to discuss and plan further. I am very excited to share that on the 28 th , while in Omaha, I accomplished a meeting with the owner of the Regency Inn Hotel where we were staying, and he was very receptive to my concerns regarding accessibility. The baseboards were being removed from the beds to allow a Hoyer lift to go under when I left. He also was very excited about the conferences we wanted to implement for disability education & networking. He is ready to wheel and deal so we can get our first date scheduled. I am already jumping into July and wanted to share my good news. I had stayed in Holiday Inn Express hotels in Columbus and Norfolk and I was so impressed with the rooms and accessibility of the whole establishment that I praised the manager and then called the owner and left a message. I was a little surprised to learn that they also had the Kearney Holiday Inn and that the rooms there when I last stayed, were very challenging. To my surprise when I stayed on July 4 th , the room had been updated to the features I praised them for with the other hotels. Yahoo! I am seeing change in progress!

I am sure July's news will be full of more GREAT events.
